Biography

Chris Short is Associate Professor in Environmental Governance in the Countryside and Community Research Institute at the University of Gloucestershire, UK. Chris is an environmental social scientist who is fascinated by changes in our understanding and management of land and water at various scales, especially as we collectively respond to the challenges of climate change and environmental decline. His research and teaching interests over the past 25 years have centre around the relationship between different land uses, communities and policies and the innovations that can result from local decision making. He is internationally recognised for his work on commons governance, landscape-scale management and nature-based solutions and participatory approaches. He is Chair of the Foundation for Common Land, a charity that seeks to provide a voice for the active management of commons in England in national policy and decision making, a long-standing member of the IASC and a founding member of a network of academics assessing the contribution of commons in Europe. He is co-investigator on a new project Satoconn that seeks to compare the culturally rich commons in Europe and Japan with a view to promoting best practice in policy development, especially that to meet the global ambition to meet 30by30.
